Quick answer: There is no single national Social Security fax number. Which number is correct depends on which office is holding your case, and SSA does not publish one central list. Two routes are reliable: the fax number printed on the letter SSA sent you, and your local office, found through SSA’s Field Office Locator. If you are sending medical records that SSA or your state disability unit asked for, the number is on the request letter and the barcoded page must go first. Confirm the number before you send, and keep the transmission confirmation — on a benefits claim the timestamp may be the only proof of when you sent it.
This page pulls together what SSA itself publishes about faxing, with a link to the source for every claim. It does not list fax numbers, because SSA does not publish a national set of them and any number we printed would go stale or be wrong for your case. What it does is tell you exactly where to get the right one.
Is there a single Social Security fax number?
No. Unlike a company with one head office, SSA operates roughly 1,200 field offices plus separate state disability units and hearing offices, and correspondence goes to whichever one is handling your case. SSA’s own instruction for sending documents is to find your local Social Security office and submit them by fax, by mail, or through that office’s drop box.
It is worth knowing that SSA lists faxing under “other ways” to submit documents. The route it presents first is uploading through a my Social Security account. That does not mean faxing is discouraged — it is offered plainly — but if you have an account and the document type is supported, the upload avoids the question of numbers entirely.

How to find the right fax number for your case
In order of reliability, best first.
- The letter SSA sent you. If you are responding to a request, the number to use is the one printed on that request. SSA states this directly for medical and school records: fax the letter along with the records to the fax number that appears on the letter. A number on current correspondence about your case beats any number you find elsewhere, including on this page.
- The Field Office Locator. SSA’s Field Office Locator is the route it names for finding where to send documents. Enter your ZIP code to get the office handling your area. If the listing does not show a fax number, the office can give it to you.
- The national phone line. SSA’s toll-free number is 1-800-772-1213, staffed 8am to 7pm Monday to Friday. Ask for the fax number of the office holding your case rather than a general one, and write down who told you.
- Not a third-party list. Fax numbers on aggregator sites, forum posts and old guides are the main way documents end up nowhere. If you cannot confirm a number against SSA correspondence or SSA itself, do not use it.
Which SSA office should receive it?
This is the part that trips people up, and it matters more than the number itself. A document faxed to the right agency but the wrong office inside it can sit unmatched to your file. Which office holds your case depends on what stage it has reached.
- Your local field office handles applications, ongoing correspondence and most general paperwork — changes of address, income or living arrangements, and completed forms. This is the default destination for anything that is not a response to a specific request.
- Your state Disability Determination Services (DDS) handles the medical side of an initial disability decision. SSA runs Electronic Records Express jointly with the state DDS units specifically for health and school records on disability claims, so if a DDS has written to you or your doctor, DDS is the destination.
- The hearing office takes over once an appeal reaches the hearing stage. SSA is explicit that the barcode you need must come from the office actually handling the claim — its example is that a case at the hearing level means contacting that hearing office. If you have a hearing notice in your hand, your local field office is the wrong destination.

One deliberate omission. We have not listed individual form codes with fax numbers against them, the way our IRS page does, because SSA does not publish a form-by-form fax table and several forms carry their own routing instructions. The rule SSA does publish is broader: you can fax or mail any paper form to your local office unless the form instructs otherwise. So the form in your hand is the authority, and it is worth reading its instructions page before you send. If we can verify a form-by-form list from SSA later, we will add it.
Before you send, and keeping proof
On a benefits claim the date matters as much as the document. Deadlines for appeals and requested evidence are real, and if something goes astray the burden of showing you sent it on time falls on you.
- Confirm the number is current. Against a letter SSA sent you recently, or by ringing the office. An old number on a saved note is worth re-checking.
- Put the barcoded page first, if you have one. SSA is explicit that the barcode is what associates your fax with your file. A fax that arrives without it may not reach your folder at all.
- Send one page as a test on anything long. It confirms the number answers as a fax before you commit forty pages to it. How to send a test fax.
- Keep the confirmation. This is the part people skip and later need. Know what a valid one looks like: the fax confirmation page. Save it as a file rather than a printout you might lose.
- Allow time on long submissions. Roughly 30 seconds to a minute a page, so a hundred-page medical file is not a five-minute job. If you are near SSA’s 200-page limit, see faxing multiple pages at once.
- Note who you spoke to. If a number came from a phone call, write down the date and the office. It costs nothing and it is evidence.

Get the document into one PDF
Photograph paper pages with a phone scanner or export the file you already have. Keep the barcoded request letter as page one if SSA sent you one. If you are unsure about formats, faxing a PDF covers it.
